Workshop garage in granite grey

Workshop garage in granite grey

The short answer

A working garage and shop finished in a mid-tone granite grey flake blend, wall to wall and out to the door line. The blend carries black, white and pale grey chips, which is what lets a floor that sees tools, tires and yard grit still read as clean between sweeps. This is a finish study of a real floor we photographed, not a record of a specific job.

Before and after

The same floor, start and finish

Before: bare stained concrete slab

Before — bare slab

After: the same room with a finished flake floor

After — coated and flaked

This is the finish most people picture when they say they want their garage done. A mid-tone granite grey flake blend, broadcast to rejection over a pigmented base and sealed with two clear polyaspartic topcoats, run wall to wall with no cut-off at the halfway point.

What the space is

A wide residential garage used as a working shop as well as parking — bench along one wall, storage, and vehicles in and out. That combination is the hardest test for a floor finish, because it gets tire traffic, dropped hardware, dragged equipment and whatever comes off the yard on a pair of boots.

What the finish does for it

Granite grey is the most forgiving blend we install. The variation between the black, white and grey chips gives your eye so much to look at that dust, concrete grit and road grime do not register as a mark until you go looking for them. A solid grey floor in the same room would show every speck from the doorway.

The clear topcoats are the working surface. Two of them, not one, because the clear is the wear layer and a single thin coat wears through in the tire paths and at the door line first. Once it is through there is no invisible repair.

What the photographs show about the prep

Look at the edges and the transitions rather than the middle of the floor. The coating runs tight to the wall line with no ragged edge, which means the perimeter was hand ground rather than left for a roller to feather into. Look at the joints: they are legible as lines in the floor rather than filled, bridged and forgotten, because a control joint exists so the slab can move and bridging one rigidly just telegraphs a crack through the finish later.

What to take from it if you are considering the same room

If your garage is a shop, choose mid-tone and choose a blend rather than a solid color. Decide before the quote whether the apron is included, because that strip at the door line is the first thing you see from the driveway. And ask how the slab gets prepared — a floor like this is diamond ground to an open profile, never acid etched, which is the whole reason it does not lift under a warm tire.

More on the system is on garage floor coating, and the blend range is on colors and finishes.

Tell us the room, roughly how big it is and when you want it done. We will measure, look at the slab and give you a price that does not move.
